PS Vita - General Discussion

The arrival of the new Sony handheld, PlayStation Vita, is now officially 2012 for the US and Europe.

Bloomberg reports that Sony will debut its successor to PlayStation Portable (PSP) early next year in the US and Europe. However the multi-touch gaming device is still on track for December in Japan.

Sony Executive Deputy President Kazuo Hirai broke the news to reporters in Tokyo last night, confirming our worst fears. According to the Bloomberg editors, Hirai maintained that “The PlayStation business is a key pillar” and talked about the need to reduce internal costs, but there are no plans to lower the retail price of PlayStation Vita despite Nintendo’s dramatic 3DS price reduction late last week.

So far PS Vita is expected to cost £229 and £279 for respective Wi-Fi only and 3G-enabled models in the UK. We’ll see how this pans out closer to launch. Whenever that may be.

What's inside the Playstation Vita

Be in no doubt that Sony’s next-generation of handheld consoles, the ‘PS Vita’, is an impressive piece of kit. You want proof of that?

Newly revealed technical details show that there’s more going on under that sleek casing than is strictly necessary. Indeed, we’re beginning to wonder whether it might be a bit too sophisticated for most gamers’ needs.
Our needs, anyway, but as long as it plays near PS3-quality games like ‘Uncharted: Golden Abyss’ (below) we won’t grumble. We may yet have a word or two to say about the price tag, though.

UMD Passport for Vita

Sony Japan has lifted the curtains on a new PlayStation Vita feature by the name of UMD Passport, allowing PlayStation Portable user to transfer content to Sony’s new handheld.

Consumers are merely required to download a special programme for PSP, available on December 6, along with the UMD of the title you want to bring to Vita.

Afterwards, simply slap the UMD in and register the game and you’ll be able to download the title for Sony’s new pocket brick at a discount.

Among the titles already confirmed for the new program include Personal 3 and Gran Turismo, and third-party companies including Capcom, Square-Enix, Sega and Konami have already pledged their support for the feature.

PlayStation Vita will be released in Japan on December 17, with a western launch arriving in February 2012.

What are your thoughts?

I'll be honest, that ain't goiing to make me blow £230 on a device that might be all but dead and buried in 18 months. Sony will need to do better than a gimmicky wallet, some average qaulity headphones, and some free games (the ones no one wants anyay)

PlayStation Vita's Euro 3G 'preferred partner' is Vodafone

Vodafone has been confirmed as the “preferred partner” for PlayStation Vita’s 3G services in European territories.
The deal will initially include the U.K., Ireland, Germany, Spain, Portugal, Australia, New Zealand and The Netherlands, as well as “Vodafone’s Partners in France,” Sony has said.

Those of you who plonk down the cash for a 3G Vita from non-Vodafone stores will receive a sim card to activate the handheld’s 3G services. If you purchase from a Vodafone store, however, you’ll also bag a free download code for WipEout 2048.
However, the portable's 3G connectivity won't be locked to just Vodafone, with consumers able to use other networks if the option is available. The 3G Vita itself will set you back €299/£279.
Jim Ryan, CEO of Sony Computer Entertainment Europe (SCEE), commented, “With social gaming and connectivity at the heart of PlayStation Vita it is important that we partner with a market leading network provider, to ensure users have a high quality 3G experience.”

“Partnering with Vodafone will enable PS Vita users in the selected countries to always be connected with their PlayStation life, friends and games, wherever they are.”
“We know from our application downloads that games are hugely popular with our customers, so we’re delighted to be SCEE’s preferred connectivity partner for 3G Vita devices sold across Europe and other selected regional markets,” added Patrick Chomet, Group Terminals Director at Vodafone.
“Using the device over Vodafone’s high-performance network with extensive 3G reach and market leading download speeds brings a reliable ‘anywhere anytime’ dimension to gaming, which customers in our initial ten launch markets will be the first to experience.”

PlayStation Vita hits Europe and the U.S. on February 22, 2012.
