Formula 4 : Season 18 : Round 01
Australian Grand Prix - Melbourne Grand Prix Circuit

Race Preview

The time for talking and speculation is over, after the winter break it's finally time to get back on track as we head to Melbourne for the first round of the F4 championship season and the Australian Grand Prix. Australia first held a grand prix in 1928, making it the oldest surviving motor racing competition in Australia, and one of the oldest in the world. Having changed venues several times, it finally landed here at Melbourne in 1996 and hasn't moved since. The traditional curtain raiser for the championship season, the track is mainly based on public roads, but despite this still boasts a fast and flowing layout which has proved popular with many drivers over the years. Whilst overtaking can be difficult, it is by no means impossible, and should make for a fantastic season opener this Sunday.

Pre-season testing didn't show the most conclusive results as the weather threw a spanner in the works of many of the teams plans. The dry qualifying runs showed the Toro Rosso's are perhaps the strongest team out there in terms of outright pace, although the Renault of Hulkenburger and a resurgent Hague in the Force India kept them more than honest. Hagues outstanding wet pace may well come in handy in what can sometimes be unpredictable conditions in Australia, but overall it still looks like anybody's race as we look to kick off the championship season in style on Sunday evening. It's time for the Australian Grand Prix.

1. Will you be racing?
Yep
2. Who are your favourites for the title after testing?
Could be one of about 5 or 6. Looks like it should be a tight season
3. Who will get the first pole position this season?
Lars (come on Toro Rosso)
4. Who is your dark horse this season?
I'll say mrp80. Quali looked good in preseason.
5. Should Australia open every season?
In PSGL, no. The joy of what we do is we aren't restricted by the seasons so we can have any order we want.
In F1, probably also no. They do a good job but I'd like to see it move a bit more or change the track so it makes for better racing.

Quali: 15th (last, no time)

Both laps invalidated. Car felt rubbish

Race: DNF

Made a monster start and was 7th by the end of lap one!

Then of course something happens as usual that isn't my fault. A Red Bull lags right in front of me and I spin off into the wall and destroy my wing.

Not the way I wanted my 50th race to end and so quickly. Oh well... another 14 rounds to come.

An exciting, and equally infuriating, race.

Q: 7th
Never got a decent lap in, so I'll take seventh.

R: 11th
I got off the line well, but blue didn't, so I had to go on the grass to avoid him which meant almost everyone behind overtook me, including blue again after T1/2. Managed to hover around 7-9th place but my strategy was poor and I waited too long on the Ultrasofts, went onto the Softs and finally got into a rhythm half way through the race, before binning it on the exit of Turn 2 and having to pit again for Ultrasofts on lap 24, couldn't quite get within the 6 second window required to take tenth place off Kali, I'm encouraged by my overall pace, but I need to cut out the errors.

Q: 5th
R: 8th

Had a really bad start, just didn't get off the line. Dropped 5 or 6 places right away.

Traded spots with Hulkenburger a couple of times while I tried to get back in the groove. Was settling in but on lap 3 something happened up ahead with MrP and lfc, I ran into it and broke my wing. Then spun myself at the next corner.

So was miles back but just kept plugging away, in the end had a great 4 way battle with sab, simo and Clyde over the last few laps. No actual overtakes but it was very tense and fair racing. Good fun.

Mostly happy just to have made it to the end given my connection issues last season!

Q: 4th
Took too much kerb in turn 9, so all my time gained on my final lap was gone. Somehow my 1st lap was good enough for 4th.

R: 2nd
I had a normal start, going into turn 3 i did a huge divebomb on simo, missed my braking point but avoided simo fortunately. Got overtaken by dave because i had a bad run through the high speed chicane. On lap 9 i decided it was time to make a pit stop for soft tyres. On the final lap my only task was to stay within 3s of grumpy to win the race but, i bottled it by cutting turn 1. Almost lost 2nd to hague because i had a massive drift through the final corner. I’ll take 2nd though, it’s a good start to the season. At least it wasn’t as bad as friso his celebrations before he crossed the line😂😂

Q - 1st

Race - 1st.

Will do a full report when I have time later but feels great to get a win again after so long.

Australia has always been kind to me though.
