[F3] Round 06 : Belgian GP : Spa (04-Jun)
« on: June 02, 2017, 09:43:32 am »
Formula 3 : Season 17 : Round 06
Belgian Grand Prix, Spa-Francorchamps, Spa

Race Preview

Last week, round Germany UnomiWonKentucky took the chequered flag with a brilliant drive to win by 3 seconds, ahead of McLaren's RDO_1998. Curtoise was the final podium sitter which leaves these 3 drivers separated by just 3 points, in which is shaping up to be a fantastic battle for the rest of the season. PzalanHUN still leads the way in the drivers' championship but, after failing to score a point in Germany, RDO_1998 has managed to close the gap down to 9 points, from 20 the previous race. McLaren also overtook Williams for the lead in the constructors championship last time out, and the gap is now 4 points between the two outfits. This weekend we head out to Belgium.

Belgium's Spa Francorchamps circuit is one of the oldest on the current F1 calendar, hosting its first race in 1922 and its first grand prix in 1925. Part of the magic of Spa is that it is known and respected as one of the most challenging in the world, and to prove that fact only six drivers have managed to win the Belgian Grand Prix at Spa more than twice: Juan Manual Fangio and Damon Hill both have three wins to their name, Jim Clark and Kimi Raikkonen managed one better with four wins and Ayrton Senna won the race five times. The undisputed Spa master though, is Michael Schumacher who has won a record six times.

1. Will you be racing? Yes
2. Who will finish on the podium here in Belgium? As long as I do, I will be happy
3. Who will get pole position? Unomi
4. When will be our first wet race of the season? Hmm well I believe it will be Belgium
5. After the announcement of the 2010 Red Bull being in F1 2017, what other classic cars do you want to see in next years game? Terrible idea and a waste of codemasters time, they should make sure they perfect the present game before they bring an old addition that didn't work
6. We've had 4 different race winners in 5 races, how many do you think we'll have in total this season? tbh there is probably 1 or maybe 2 drivers who has not won a race this season that should do, so we shall just see

got a tankslapper thru eau rouge on lap 1, but me down at the back from p3. Once we went to wets i made my way up from P13 to P6 ish, and was 2nd fastest on track whilst passing cars but went down inside of craig as he lost rear thru eau rouge so i ended up in the wall from there, disappointing as I was catching cars ahead really quickly and probably could've got around P4 - maybe higher if there woulda been a SC but i doubt there would've

Q: 13th - It was not the best soft lap you'll ever see but to be honest it did the job for what I wanted from the race!

R: 1st - Awesome race, In many ways I'm glad my first win was on this type of track because it proves to myself that I can succeed on faster tracks with the right conditions and strategy! The race had a lot of action as well, It was a good race to watch back! I really didn't expect to be doing quick times in the inter conditions, but it seems like I was on the pace of RDO/OTP and Ashbest during that stint before the SC. Last few laps were tense, especially having to fight Hun for the lead, despite a tyre advantage you just never know what will happen in a fight like that. Very happy with the race  :D

Race Report

The race start, as normal, was a very cautious one due to the fact that rain was just a few laps away. No point ramming it into a wall or another car when there is a real chance of a mixed up race coming up. I made a place in T1 due to Narayan being bullied out wide, I was in 11th after Eau Rouge when RDO and Curt crashed, and then Narayan took me down the inside of the first chicane. I was 8th by the end of lap 2 after some incidents ahead and Narayan hitting Ashbests Lagging Sauber.

VSC came out and towards the end I hit ashbest a little, giving me orange damage to my front right wing area. This cost me a lot of time in the 1 and a half laps before the rain, and even more in the pits. But crucially I was out in 6th place. Once out of the pits, Unomi had disconnected so that was an easy 5th place. Bacho behind just didn't seem to be able to respond to my times and I pulled away. Yarhamm was ahead of me on lap 7 but I was catching him quickly, he pitted on lap 9 before I could pass him. At this stage I must have been one of the 4 or 5 fastest on track, as I said above, I think RDO, me, ashbest and OTP were trading times with Hun in his own league out in front! But a race win was never on the cards here, I was hoping to secure 4th.

By lap 13 (The lap of the SC) I was 13 seconds ahead of Bacho and 6 behind Ashbest. The gap ahead was slowly coming down but at the current rate we were on the same tyres with the time coming down a couple of tenths a lap, so when the SC came out I just decided that the only option was fresh inters. I thought my tyres would be almost dead by the end so I went for it. Honestly I thought the cars ahead had pitted but clearly not.

After the restart I got a far better run out of T1 than ashbest and drove right past, and then I had a good run on OTP to get partly alongside going into the first chicane after Eau Rouge and just went for a move. Thankfully it stuck and that was that, all that was left was pushing hard to catch Hun and waiting for the track to come to me. By lap 20 it was just too dry for Hun and I put a move on him coming out of the last corner. He made me fight for it down the straight after Eau Rouge on lap 21 but he didn't have the grip to pull anything off, and thankfully he didn't try anything silly.

I didn't think a win was possible even with the SC, I mainly wanted to regain a buffer to Bacho and look to snatch a podium but in the end 2 crucial overtakes in the space of sector 1 set it up perfectly. Once I'd gotten second there was no way I was settling for it, I was delighted and surprised to see Hun on wets. And this time I nothing happened to stop me, no mistakes and I finally got a win!

With Hun now gone this sets up an interesting title battle! It's only a matter of time until I have a bad result but we will see where the season goes. Right now any of the top 5 can win the title based on the first 6 races. And you cannot discount Fraggle and OTP, even if they cannot win it they can have a serious impact on its end.

And the constructors is tight as well, Top 3 teams look very close.

Shockingly bad race for me.

Had made up some places early on, but on lap 2 I spun out by myself and speared off the track. Unfortunately I collided with Dougie and ended his race. I also got a 5s stop-go for it and smashed up my wing.

Whilst stationary for my penalty, the VSC came out. It appeared that the game then voided the serving of the penalty, so I needed to serve it again!

Somehow still on the lead lap, I continued.

When the full SC came out later, I heard Jeff mumble something about dry weather, so I gambled and put some slicks on.  After taking back 20s or so, and Jeff changing his mind about the weather, it was time to call it quits.

Always next week I suppose!
